- 1. Lilongwe — Provision, prepare and confirm northern-road conditions.
- 2. Nkhotakota — Escarpment wilderness and a natural break on the lake road.
- 3. Nkhata Bay — Lively lake port, beaches and licensed water activities.
- 4. Viphya Plateau — Forested highland walks and a cool scenic pause.
- 5. Nyika National Park — Montane grasslands, wildlife, hiking and birding.
- 6. Livingstonia — Historic plateau settlement with dramatic lake views.
- 7. Karonga — Archaeology and northern lakeshore history.
Suggested pacing
- Day 1: Lilongwe — Prepare for longer northern distances.
- Days 2–3: Nkhotakota — Break the journey with an escarpment or conservation stay.
- Days 4–5: Nkhata Bay — Allow a flexible lake day using established providers.
- Day 6: Viphya Plateau — Use the highlands as a walking and positioning day.
- Days 7–9: Nyika — Slow down for wildlife, birding and changing weather.
- Days 10–11: Livingstonia — Confirm the approach and explore respectfully on foot.
- Day 12: Karonga — Finish with northern lakeshore history or begin the return.
